The Trade Weighted DollarAccording to the Federal Reserve, the trade weighted dollar is "a weighted average of the foreign exchange value of the U.S. dollar, as measured against a subset of the broad index currencies that circulate widely outside the country of issue." They create an index based on the average of the currencies of the countries with which the U.S. trades. The weight the U.S. carries in the index is directly proportional to the amount of trade the U.S. does with a specific currency.
